We sat down with Rachel to talk about her signature style and what every bride should know before the big day. Here’s Rachel in her own words.

What inspired you to become a makeup artist, and how did your journey begin?

I was never really a makeup girl growing up, you’d only ever find a little Vaseline tin in my bag! But after having my son, who was poorly when he was born, my path changed. I went from retail management to working for Estée Lauder and that’s where my love of makeup really began. I realised how powerful it could be in making women feel confident and beautiful. It was also where I first discovered the magic of wedding mornings and I knew I wanted to be part of that world. From there, my passion grew into a career and I’ve never looked back, in fact this month I’ll celebrate 10 years as Rachel Bray Makeup Artistry.

How would you describe your signature style when it comes to bridal makeup?

My signature style is all about soft, romantic beauty with a luxury finish. I focus on glowing, flawless looks ~ think skin that looks like skin, just perfected. Whether a bride wants something completely natural or slightly more glam, my approach is timeless and elegant, never heavy or overdone.

I’m also known for my BRONZEE look, which is unique to me. It’s a beautiful balance of radiant, bronzed tones that give brides that effortless, glowing, “just stepped off a plane” kind of luminosity with rosé pink hues. It’s become a firm favourite for so many of my brides because it feels modern but will remain timeless in their wedding photos.

Can you share one of your most memorable experiences working with a bride?

There are so many moments that stay with me, but one that stands out is when a bride’s dad walked in and saw her for the first time. He became so emotional, hugging her and telling her she looked beautiful. Knowing I had a small part in creating that moment was really special. Those reactions from loved ones are just as memorable for me as they are for the bride. I’m often shedding a happy tear in the corner 🥹

What can brides expect during a makeup trial with you?

A trial is such a lovely, relaxed experience. We sit down, chat through your vision, look at your dress, your venue and how you usually wear your makeup. Then we create a look together that makes you feel like you, only enhanced. I always allow plenty of time so you never feel rushed and you leave feeling confident and excited for your wedding day.

I also provide my brides with guides to keep them informed at every step of the process, it’s so important to me that you feel supported from start to finish. During the trial we’ll also talk about skincare, because healthy, glowing skin is the perfect base for makeup. Every bride’s skin is different, so I personalise advice to make sure it’s looking its absolute best in time for the big day.

Which products or techniques do you rely on for creating long-lasting wedding makeup?

I use only luxury, high-end products that I know photograph beautifully and last from morning until night. Skin prep is key, I tailor it to each bride so the makeup sits perfectly. I also use techniques like layering creams and powders subtly, which means the makeup looks fresh but doesn’t budge, even after hours of laughter (and happy tears!).

How do you help keep a bride calm and relaxed on the wedding morning?

The wedding morning should feel joyful, not stressful. I bring a calm, organised presence and create a relaxed atmosphere. Think of it as a little bubble of calm before the excitement of the day begins. My brides often say I feel like a friend on the morning, and that’s exactly how I want it to be. I’m your biggest supporter and hype girl, but can also read the room if you’re nervous and I am on hug duty if needed!

Have you ever faced challenges on a wedding day, and how did you overcome them?

Weddings don’t always go exactly to plan, it could be timings running a little late, unexpected weather, or last-minute nerves. I always stay calm, adapt quickly and make sure my brides feel reassured. My job is not just to do makeup, but to keep everything flowing smoothly in my corner of the morning.

Do you also provide makeup services for bridesmaids, mothers of the bride, and the bridal party?

Yes, absolutely! I love being part of the whole bridal party’s morning. Bridesmaids and mums always deserve to feel just as special and I tailor their looks to complement the bride’s style. Everyone leaves the chair glowing and feeling amazing.

What advice do you give brides when choosing their wedding makeup style?

Always stay true to yourself. Your wedding makeup should feel like the best version of you, not like you’re wearing someone else’s style. I encourage my brides to think about how they normally feel most comfortable, and then we elevate that with a bridal twist. Your look should be soft, timeless, and beautiful both in person and in photos for years to come… Look at your makeup artists work and make sure it inspires you!

What do you love most about being a bridal makeup artist?

For me, it’s the privilege of being part of such a meaningful day. I get to share those quiet, intimate hours with brides before they walk down the aisle and there’s nothing like seeing them beam with confidence. Making women feel beautiful is my passion and weddings allow me to do that in the most special way.
